Student Affiliate: Student Affiliate is a program sponsored by Texas Music Teachers Association which provides opportunities and incentives to students at all levels of musical development. Student Affiliate offers many musical experiences which foster a genuine love for music, a challenge for musical independence, and a sense of achievement.

Recital: To provide solo and small ensemble performance opportunities to music students.  Participation is open to all vocal and instrumental students in the Metroplex.

Jazz Festival: To expose students to the various styles of our uniquely American music. Students will perform a memorized jazz piece for a judge. All participating students receive a critique and a participation ribbon. Students receiving Superior ratings receive an additional Superior ribbon.

Hymn Festival: To challenge students to learn the skills necessary for performing in a church. There are three categories depending on the students’ ability. No memory is required. All participating students receive a critique and a participation ribbon. Students receiving Superior ratings receive an additional Superior ribbon.

Publication Contest: Students write about different subjects and become published authors.  Cash awards are given.

Original Composition Contest: To encourage students to share their creative endeavors with others and to allow students the opportunity to have their work evaluated by a proven composer.

Solo Festival: Students will perform a memorized piece for a judge. All participating students receive a critique and a participation ribbon. Students receiving Superior ratings receive an additional Superior ribbon. Additionally, those students receiving a Superior+ rating will receive a medal to be presented by their teacher.

Ensemble Festival: To challenge students to learn the skills necessary for performing with other musicians so that they understand that music making is meant to be a collaborative art form. Students should play music written for 2 – 8 performers, any combination of instruments, any type of literature. Memory is not required. All participating students receive a critique and a participation ribbon. Students receiving Superior ratings receive an additional Superior ribbon. Additionally, those students receiving a Superior+ rating will receive a medal to be presented by their teacher.

State Ensemble: To provide students with the challenge of performing with a chamber-sized group and the opportunity to see and hear other similar groups from across Texas. Students selected will have to attend several rehearsals locally and will perform at the Texas Music Teachers Convention in June.

Theory Test: To set a standard per grade level of the theory fundamentals each student is expected to learn and to test individual students’ knowledge of theory against that standard.

World of Music Test: To challenge students to understand more about music than simply music reading fundamentals.

Chamber Music: Students attending the TMTA Convention in June may want to also participate in the Chamber Music.
