METROPLEX MUSIC TEACHERS ASSOCIATION

RECITALS

What is a MMTA recital?

It is an event where music students, like yourself, come together from all over the Metroplex to perform a piece of music on their musical instrument. Performers sit at the front of the recital room, and their family and friends sit in the audience behind them.

Where do I go?

Check carefully as to which location you are going. EACH RECITAL IS HELD IN A DIFFERENT PLACE.

What time do I arrive?

At least 10 minutes before the recital begins so that you are calm and can perform your very best.

How do I know when to play my piece?

Usually, you will be seated in the order that you play. To make sure you’re playing at the correct time, read along in your printed program as the other students perform.

How can I make sure I will have a good performance?

Prepare-prepare-prepare!!! Play your piece for as many people as you can before your recital. You’ll be surprised how easy it is to lose your place, especially if you aren’t used to playing in front of others. Ask your teacher for different ways to practice to help you improve your memory.

Am I allowed to make mistakes while playing my piece?

Yes-most people make tiny mistakes when playing in front of others. Really experienced performers are experts at covering their mistakes. Most people in the audience don't even notice unless they’ve played the piece themselves.

But what do I do if I have a memory slip and lose my place?

Do what the experts do-try not to stop. Try really hard to go forward in the music-IT IS ALMOST NEVER A GOOD IDEA TO GO BACK TO THE BEGINNING AND START THE PIECE AGAIN!!! After playing a few wrong notes, you may be surprised to find that you know where you are and can continue a good performance. It helps tremendously to have several starting points within the piece itself.

What should I do after playing my piece?

Smile at the audience and give a nice bow, even if you’re unhappy with your playing. The audience will be proud of you and will look forward to your next performance.

Why do I have to bow to the audience at the end of the piece?

Bowing is a way for a performer to say, "Thank you for listening. I’m glad you liked my playing." Practice your bow until you can do it with style!

Why do I have to dress up for the recital?

Recital day is a special day for you-you’ll want to look your best.

Why can’t I leave with my family after my piece is finished?

First, you’ll miss out on all the wonderful performances that come after you. Second, it is considered bad manners to leave the students at the end of program without an audience.

What should I do after the recital?

Celebrate!! You have just done something most people will never even try. Live it up, and look forward to the next time.
